Application of driver assistance systems in commercial vehicles

Within the scope of this project advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) for commercial vehicles will be analysed with respect to their potential in increasing traffic safety. In a first step, the population of accidents of the official statistics (year 2004) with participation of delivery vans, trucks and coaches are analysed regarding the site and accident results and evaluated regarding the accident type, the accident category and the cause of accident. The result of this analysis are matrices that indicate which combination of accident type and category offers the biggest potential.
Based on these matrices, a representative selection of accident declarations is made and used for a further analysis, which takes into account the accident details. Basis of these analysis is the GIDAS-database. The detailed analysis of 734 accidents with involvement of commercial vehicles and coaches shows depending on the ADAS 16 (Blind Spot Detection) to 129 (Collision Mitigation) accidents, that could have been influenced by the correspondent ADAS. Concluding the accident analysis, simulations with the traffic flow simulation program PELOPS are performed in order to determine the “accident prevention potential” of selected ADAS.
The preferred ADAS are evaluated using a costbenefit analysis. The results of this cost-benefit analysis are:


• ACC: 232,8 Mio. € / 84,6 Mio. € = 2,75
• LDW: 104,3 Mio. € / 39,5 Mio. € = 2,64
• ESP: 42,6 Mio. € / 36,7 Mio. € = 1,16
• CM: 290,8 Mio. € / 95,9 Mio. € = 3,03


Besides this positive assessment exist some resistances and barriers concerning the market introduction of ADAS. An economical barrier is, that - independently of admission rules - in case of an accident the civil liability lies with the owner of the vehicle given the today's product liability law, especially concerning non-overrideable ADAS.
The described resistances and barriers have to be overcome in order to increase the penetration rate and to benefit from the positive effects.
