The research activities of the institute in the field of road construction technology focus on a future-oriented, progressive and modern infrastructure, taking into account the needs of road users, the environment and construction companies.

The aim is to maximize the functionality and durability of pavements by optimizing existing pavements on the market and developing new road pavement materials. This is done taking into consideration the entire life cycle of the roadway, from the production of the building materials and paving to the assessment of the quality of the roadway system in operation. The institute has comprehensive "know-how" in the field of simulation-supported as well as experimental investigation methods.

The following research areas are currently under discussion:

Bitumen & Asphalt:

  • Development of analytics for advanced bitumen & asphalt testing
  • Optimization of the properties of bitumen at the molecular level
  • Optimization of the performance properties of asphalts

Multifunctional road building materials:

  • Development of water-permeable road pavements made of alternative building materials
  • Market placement of novel road construction materials based on polyurethane
  • Expansion of the function of the traffic area towards energy generation

Dimensioning & maintenance:

  • Superstructure dimensioning for asphalt and concrete fixings
  • Development of numerical simulation methods to evaluate crack formation and propagation in asphalt superstructures
  • Development of multi-scale models to assess the durability of asphalt structures

Installation & Quality:

  • Optimization of asphalt paving and compaction processes
  • Optimization of the quality of asphalt pavements, including the paving and compaction process
  • Development of methods for non-destructive load-bearing capacity measurement and evaluation of the road superstructure

Surface properties:

  • Development of noise-reducing road surfaces based on plastic
  • Non-contact condition detection of flatness and skid resistance
  • Evaluation of the macro- and microscopic surface topography with regard to its effect on flatness and skid resistance
