Asphalt Surface on a Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement
Scientific monitoring of the test sections in composite structure during the operating period
Up to now, concrete pavements in Germany have been constructed as standard as non-reinforced slabs with dowelled joints. Alternatively, a concrete pavement can be designed with continuous longitudinal reinforcement (CRCP) and without joints. In this case, a continuous longitudinal reinforcement is arranged centrally in the neutral zone of the concrete slab.
In the context of the research project, eight trial and test sections in CRCP are being investigated in Germany and Poland:
- B56 near Düren
- A5 near Darmstadt
- A11 near Bernau
- Development road near Geseke
- A94 near Forstinning
- A5 near Bruchsal
- Park facility Czestochowa
- A4 near Wroclaw
The results of the above mentioned tracks will be compared with standard designs in Belgium:
- A11 / 49 Kaprijke
- A3 / E 40 Leuven
- A13 / E313
The aim of the research project is to provide an answer as to whether the construction with a continuously reinforced concrete pavement and optionally with a thin surface layer of asphalt or an alternative construction material can be a new standard construction method for highly loaded highways with the loads of the future. The objective is to evaluate the CRCP construction method in the German highway network and, if necessary, to formulate a new standard construction method for highly loaded highways. This is then to be implemented on a freeway as part of a further test section.
