Environmentally friendly road coverings with exhaust gas aftertreatment by photocatalytic removal of nitrogen dioxide using nanotechnology

Due to an ever-growing car fleet in Germany, the atmosphere is increasingly contaminated with pollutants and exhaust fumes. The focus is on the emission of nitrogen dioxide (NO2). The main cause of the high NO2 load is the NO and NO2 emissions from road traffic caused by the combustion of fuel. One possibility for nitrogen reduction is the so-called photocatalytic action of titanium dioxide (TiO2). Under the action of UV rays TiO2 nanoparticles decompose the oxides of nitrogen by oxidation. The photocatalyst TiO2 is not consumed, but can be used repeatedly in an infinite number of times. From the scientific, technical as well as economical point of view, the use of TiO2 nanoparticles in the road surface makes it possible for the first time to absorb the NO2 pollution of the environment significantly.
