Models are needed to assist in the design of road surfaces and to predict their essential properties. In this way ITARI will supply knowledge, methodology and insight to enable the research community to develop sustainable road transport for the future. ITARI focuses on the interaction between tyre/vehicle and road with its consequences with respect to

  • Rolling resistance and fuel consumption
  • Noise generation and radiation
  • Safety
  • Production techniques.

The main scientific and technical objectives of ITARI will consist of three categories: design tools, measurement methods, and demonstration of production techniques. The objective of this set of design tools is to allow for virtual design of road surfaces and their essential properties. This will include tools for designing:

  • New and innovative road surfaces leading to low tyre/road noise generation
  • Roads with low rolling resistance
  • Safe road surfaces (wet grip).
