More detailed information can be found in the respective Examination Regulations in the official announcements of RWTH Aachen University.

Course Description

The course "Road Planning II" provides in-depth knowledge in the areas of planning, routing, dimensioning and operation of non-local roads. This includes topics such as plan approval, RE design, HOAI, environmental concerns, drainage, area requirements, protective facilities, tank and rest facilities, traffic signs, intersection design and account point dimensioning, traffic light technology, winter and operational services, securing work sites, statistics in traffic planning, traffic flow theory and traffic flow simulation, design and control of traffic control systems and traffic safety. The semester-long project exercise "Design of a Highway" is the preliminary requirement for the final written exam for students in the master's programs. The exercise consists of a rough routing, the implementation of the design by means of a routing software and the assessment of the design in the driving simulator.

Learning Objectives

  • Independent design of road traffic facilities, taking into account advanced traffic theoretical contexts
  • Independent selection of concepts in road operation and road traffic engineering
  • In-depth understanding of the interrelationships in road and planning law
  • Independent conception of measures in the design to eliminate accident black spots
  • Independent use of planning and routing software
