Course Description

The course will provide an introduction to the basic principles of multilayer theory and the finite element method (FEM) for pavement analysis. Furthermore, methods for modeling the elastic, plastic, viscoelastic and viscoplastic behavior of pavement materials will be presented. Experimental concepts especially in the field of performance characterization of pavement materials are taught theoretically and practically (in the laboratory). In the second part of the course, principles of mechanical, hydraulic and thermal analysis of water permeable pavement structures will be presented. An introduction to basic concepts of physical linear and nonlinear analysis is further given.

Learning Objectives

  • Basic knowledge in the field of analytical and numerical analysis of pavement materials
  • Performance-oriented experimental approaches to pavement material behavior at the component and mix levels
  • Efficient use of analysis and design software for pavement applications under stationary and moving loads
  • Identification of factors affecting the accuracy of experimental investigations and analytical and numerical analysis

Course Scope

  • Credit Points: 6
  • Lecture: 3 SWS
  • Seminar: 3 SWS
