The Institute of Highway Engineering at RWTH Aachen University deals with central topics of road planning and equipment, traffic flow, as well as road safety and the digitalization of traffic.

The subject of the work in the area of traffic engineering is questions of traffic control, taking into account parameters of traffic safety and quality. Of particular importance is an interdisciplinary and perspective-rich approach: In addition to the department of traffic management, traffic engineering at ISAC also includes a separate research group dealing with traffic digitalization. The departments of traffic engineering are in active exchange with each other as well as with the other departments at the institute, civil engineering and tunnel engineering, which enables them to achieve optimal results.

The Department of Traffic Space Design conducts research on the topics of traffic control and road equipment, communication in traffic control, and safety in road traffic. The researchers are in close exchange with the other departments of the institute, the Department of Digitization of Traffic, Construction Technology and Tunnel Technology.
